Can your home have too much natural light?

Every homeowner loves sunlight, and there are few things that can make a room more beautiful than opening the curtains and letting it in. Not to mention the great health and mood benefits that it gives you, which experts have observed for years. It’s only natural to want as much natural light in your home as possible.

But does the phrase “too much of a good thing” apply here as well? While you might not immediately notice it, letting large amounts of the sun’s rays into your home does have some significant drawbacks.

1. Furniture – First, sunlight doesn’t play well with upholstered furniture and carpets. UV rays, in particular, are incredibly damaging. With excessive natural lighting, you will soon notice your prized sofa start to discolour and dry. If only a portion of it gets regular exposure, the difference will be even more noticeable.

2. Health – Yes, natural light is good for you. The UV rays that come with it, on the other hand, are not. Unless you want to wear sunscreen while indoors, you will have to find a way to tone it down. Otherwise, you face the risk of developing serious skin diseases over time.

3. Appearance – Believe it or not, too much light can actually make a room less attractive. How can you appreciate the wonderful interior design when the sun’s glare is in full force, and all you can think about is escaping to another room – or at least shutting the blinds?

Understandably, you might be reluctant to block out the sun from your living rooms or cover the beautiful windows with window treatments. The good news is that you don’t have to; with high-quality window tinting films, you can have natural lighting without worrying about any of the drawbacks.
